Att home with Stephanie Knox

When the opportunity came to us to furnish a home in the brand new New Cross Lofts we jumped at the chance.

The building and interior were designed by architect duo Chan and Eayrs. They wanted to build a space that created a sense of calm to counteract a busy London lifestyle. Speaking to Elle Decoration, the pair said: 'London is urban, frantic and largely artificial, so we wanted to counter the chaos with a calm, natural palette.'

The apartment has a certain tranquility, helped by the light that floods in from the large windows. Chan and Eayrs chose wall colour that resemble raw plaster but is in fact painted in Farrow and Balls 'Setting Plaster' applied in sweeps to create a distressed effect. When we decorated this apartment we wanted to create a space that complimented the clean lines, dusky pink walls and and industrial windows.

In the well proportioned living area we were keen to inject some warmth and character. Adding a large textured rug, velvet ottoman and felt sofa, creating soft lines against the the strong edges of the window frames and doors.

To bring out the plaster pink of the wall and light wood of the floors, we kept to a simple colour pallet, sticking to deep blues, greens from plants and warm metals. We split the living space using the sofa, with a bench behind it for books and plants. Adding interesting plants to different areas of the room adds a focal points while giving it a fresh feel.

Chan and Eayrs have a done a beautiful job designing a calm fuss free kitchen/dining area. The tongue-and-groove panelling clads several of the walls complements the painted shaker style kitchen units.

We didn't want the TV to be a huge focal point in this multi-use room. In order for it not to become the main attraction, we framed it with some prints and art work to create a gallery style wall. To finish off the whole look we used the couples personal artefacts like books, framed photos and trinkets to keep the whole space homely and unique.
