How to Install: Roman blinds
Installing Roman blinds in your home
Our roman blinds arrive ready to install, with the fabric attached to a slim, discreet track using a Velcro strip. The brackets can be mounted either in the ceiling / inside recess (top fix) or on the wall (face fix). Below you’ll find simple instructions for installing both corded and chain-operated styles.
What you will need
-
Drill and suitable drill bits
-
Wall plugs suitable for your wall type (screws are provided)
-
Measuring tape
-
Pencil for marking
-
Spirit level (optional but recommended)
-
Step ladder if mounting high
Step 1 – Fit the brackets and track (for both styles)
Installing the track is the same whether your blind is corded or chain-operated.
-
Decide where you want to mount the blind — either inside the window recess / in ceiling (fixing into the ceiling of the recess) or on the wall above the window.
-
Hold one bracket in place and lightly mark the screw holes with a pencil. Repeat on the other end of the blind, and use any additional brackets supplied for wider blinds.
-
Drill your holes and insert wall plugs if needed.
-
Screw the brackets firmly into place. The small lever on each bracket should point downwards (corded) or out (chain), ready to lock the track in.
-
Clip the track onto the brackets by hooking the back edge in first, pushing upward until it clicks into place, and then turning the lever to lock it securely.
To remove the track in future, rotate the lever back downward and release the track.
Bracket
Each bracket includes a small rotating lever that locks the track into place. Make sure all levers point in the same direction before clipping on the track.
Track and Velcro strip
The top of the roman blind fabric attaches to the track via a Velcro strip. Once the track is installed, simply press the fabric along the full width to attach it.
Corded Roman Blinds
Corded blinds arrive with a long operating cord so you can adjust it to your preferred height while still meeting child-safety regulations.
-
Lower the blind fully to check that it hangs straight and the hem is level.
-
Choose the most comfortable operating height for the cord, ensuring it will sit well out of reach of children.
-
Trim the cord if needed and reattach the cord weight or finish.
Step 3 – Fitting the cleat (for corded styles)
A cord cleat must be installed on the wall for safe operation.
-
Position the cleat at least 150 cm above the floor, aligned with the cord.
-
Mark the screw holes, drill and plug if necessary, and screw the cleat firmly in place.
-
When the blind is not in use, always wind the cord around the cleat in a figure-of-eight shape.
Everyday use – corded style
-
Gently pull the cord to raise or lower the blind.
-
Wrap the cord around the cleat each time after use.
-
Never leave a loose loop of cord hanging freely.
Chain-Operated Roman Blinds
Chain-operated blinds use a continuous chain to raise and lower the blind. The chain side is usually selected when ordering to best suit your room layout.
Step 3 – Attaching the blind fabric
Once the track is secured:
-
Press the top edge of the blind fabric firmly onto the Velcro strip along the front of the track.
-
Smooth the fabric down and make sure the folds sit evenly.
Step 4 – Installing the chain safety device
All chain-operated blinds must be fitted with a safety device to keep the chain under tension.
-
With the blind fully lowered, pull the chain straight down and mark the position for the safety clip or tensioner.
-
Install the device so the chain is lightly tensioned — never slack — and positioned at least 60 cm above the floor.
-
Mark and drill the screw holes, then secure the device in place.
-
Clip the chain into the safety device according to the instructions supplied.
Everyday use – chain-operated style
-
Gently pull one side of the chain to raise the blind and the other side to lower it.
-
Always operate the blind using the chain, not by pulling the fabric.
-
Periodically check that the chain safety device remains secure and correctly tensioned.
Child Safety – For Both Styles
Both corded and chain-operated blinds must be installed and used with child safety in mind.
-
Keep all cords and chains out of reach of children at all times.
-
Corded blinds: the cleat must be installed at least 150 cm from the floor, and the cord wrapped around it when not in use.
-
Chain-operated blinds: the chain safety device must hold the chain under tension and be installed at least 60 cm above the floor.
-
Avoid placing cots, beds, or furniture near windows where children could climb up and reach the blind controls.
Final Checks
-
Test the blind several times to make sure it raises and lowers smoothly.
-
Ensure the bottom hem sits level.
-
Check all screws, brackets, and safety devices are secure.
