Att Home with...Matthew Calvin

Jewellery designer Matthew Calvin and his husband, Joe, welcome us into their home in Portugal. Matthew's brand is know for its contemporary and minimalist style, which is mirrored in the interior choices he has made in the couples home.  Matthew works from home so his focus has been on creating a space that's easy to keep organised and welcomes creativity. We love the outdoor / indoor feel of the space, which if full of character, charm and plenty of plants!

What are your top 5 things that you couldn't live without in your home?

A special Japanese knife I bought in Kyoto - I love cooking so I use this every day. Houseplants - my husband Joe is a gardener so they feature heavily in our home and really bring that extra dimension into the house. My office space - now I work from home permanently I’ve worked really hard on making it into a space that I actually enjoy spending time in. My coffee machine - I can’t start the day without a proper coffee! Our collection of prints and artwork - Joe and I bring something back from every place we visit, it has become a tradition of ours.

Is there a piece in your home that has traveled with you from each place you have lived in? What is it, why do you love it?

I have a collection of vases that have been the most impractical things to move over the years but that I love none the less! I love being outside, so it’s always been really important to me to bring nature into the house in any way I can. I have quite the collection to choose from.

Anything new you are looking to add to your home currently?

We moved house a couple of years ago and now have a beautiful garden - Joe has worked really hard to make the outside space a green haven, so I think our next purchase will be some garden furniture so we can really make the most of the space.

Was there a place or something you saw recently that inspired your home style?

I recently stayed at the Santa Clara 1728 hotel in Lisbon. Part of the silent living group, the rooms are beautifully simplistic and have a ’staying with family’ feel. The open plan bedrooms with incredible views over the Tejo instantly put me into a relaxed state, so I’d love to try and recreate a room like this at home. https://www.silentliving.pt/houses/santa-clara-1728/

Where do you find inspiration for space? What does being at home mean to you?

As a child my family home was always full of people visiting, and when I grew up I knew I wanted my home to be the same. We have taken a lot of inspiration from places we’ve traveled over the years, and have tried to ensure our current space feels like a home away from home for our friends and family, too. As we’re no longer living in London it was really important for us to curate a space that’s perfect for entertaining whilst still feeling homely and comfortable.

Tell us what you are currently working on for your jewellery brand?

For the last couple of years we were putting all of our energy into rebranding the business and picking up on trade sales that were lost during the pandemic. Now we’ve finalised the rebrand we are focused on designing new ranges that sit nicely alongside it. We also have some incredible collaborations in the works which I wish I could say more about, but I can’t wait for them to launch too! Checkout the latest Matthew Calvin designs here.
